Overview
Preconception care is the medical evaluation and optimisation of maternal health before conception. It is not routine health screening — it is targeted risk assessment and intervention designed to reduce the probability of complications before they arise.
The goal is to enter pregnancy in the best possible condition — reducing the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, congenital abnormality, and maternal deterioration.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book a preconception care appointment?
Ideally three to six months before you plan to conceive. This gives time to optimise chronic conditions, adjust or replace medications that may harm a pregnancy, correct nutritional deficiencies, and complete any recommended genetic screening before you start trying.
Do I need a referral, or can I book myself?
You can self-refer directly for a preconception consultation; a referral from your GP or gynaecologist is welcome but not required. If you have a complex medical condition, bringing recent test results and a list of your current medications helps us prepare a focused plan.
I have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Why does it matter before pregnancy?
Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, epilepsy and autoimmune disease carry the highest risk to a pregnancy in the first weeks — often before a woman knows she is pregnant. Bringing these under control beforehand measurably reduces the risk of miscarriage, congenital abnormality and maternal complications. We also review your medications for teratogenic (fetal-harming) risk and adjust them safely.
We are cousins (a consanguineous couple). Should we have genetic screening before pregnancy?
Yes. Consanguineous couples share more genes and have a higher chance of both carrying the same recessive condition, such as thalassaemia or a metabolic disorder. Preconception carrier screening identifies these risks in advance, so you can understand your options with clear information rather than after a pregnancy is affected.
What actually happens during the consultation?
It is a comprehensive consultative session, not a quick check. We review your full medical history, current medications, previous pregnancies and lifestyle, arrange carrier screening and any indicated tests, and assess the cervix and uterus where relevant. You leave with a clear, personalised roadmap to enter pregnancy in the best possible health.
