Clinical Travel & Care Guidelines

Which cases are worth travelling for?

  • Monochorionic twin complications (TTTS, TAPS, sIUGR) requiring fetoscopic laser therapy
  • Suspected fetal structural abnormalities requiring subspecialist neurosonography or fetal echocardiography
  • High-risk maternal conditions needing combined MFM and tertiary intensive care
  • Invasive diagnostic testing (Amniocentesis, CVS) with immediate laboratory microarray processing

Which visits can be done in one day?

  • Comprehensive fetal anomaly scans (20-week survey) combined with consultant feedback
  • First trimester double/combined screening and nuchal translucency (NT) assessment
  • Amniocentesis and CVS procedures, including preliminary FISH analysis setup

Which tests need planning?

  • Fetoscopic laser ablation for TTTS (requires immediate MFM team coordination)
  • Intrauterine fetal blood transfusion (IUT) for suspected fetal anaemia
  • Multidisciplinary pre-surgical consultations for CDH or LUTO shunt placements

When should the referring OB call urgently?

  • Rapid increase in abdominal girth in monochorionic twin pregnancies (TTTS symptom)
  • Severe early-onset pre-eclampsia symptoms or blood pressure spikes
  • Sudden reduction in fetal movement in high-risk pregnancies or suspected growth restriction

What documents should the patient bring?

  • Official Emirates ID and passport copy
  • Recent obstetric ultrasound reports and scan images (printed or digital)
  • Laboratory results (NIPT screen, blood counts, glucose tolerance tests)
  • Physician referral letter (if available) detailing clinical concerns
