In brief — the direct answer

Being referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist can be daunting. You might be here for a routine detailed scan, or because your primary doctor saw something that needs a closer look. Our goal is to provide clarity and expert care. Understanding what will happen during your visit can help alleviate 'scanxiety' and ensure we get the best possible images of your baby.

Why is an MFM Scan Different?

Unlike a quick routine check at your obstetrician’s office, an MFM ultrasound is a highly detailed, targeted examination. Our machines are the most advanced available, and our doctors are specially trained to examine the fetal anatomy millimeter by millimeter. This means the scan will take longer—usually between 30 to 45 minutes—as we carefully check the baby's brain, heart, spine, limbs, and organs.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

To give you the best care, we need the full picture of your health. Please bring:

  • Your Emirates ID and insurance card.
  • Any previous ultrasound reports and images.
  • Results of recent blood tests (especially NIPT or combined screening).
  • A list of all medications you are currently taking.
  • Your pregnancy health record booklet.

During the Ultrasound: What to Expect

You will lie comfortably in a darkened room so the doctor can clearly see the screen. We use warm ultrasound gel on your abdomen. Sometimes, if the baby is in a difficult position or if it is very early in the pregnancy, we may need to perform a transvaginal ultrasound to get clear images. The doctor may be quiet during parts of the scan; this is just because they are concentrating on taking precise measurements, not necessarily because something is wrong.

Managing 'Scanxiety'

It is incredibly common to feel anxious before an MFM appointment. We call this 'scanxiety.' Remember that knowledge is power. Most of the time, we are able to reassure parents that their baby is perfectly healthy. If we do find an issue, you are already in exactly the right place to receive the best possible medical advice and care plan. Bring your partner or a support person to hold your hand and help you remember what the doctor says.

After the Appointment

Once the scan is complete, the doctor will sit with you, explain the findings in plain language, and answer all your questions. We will discuss the health of your baby, your placenta, and the amniotic fluid. If any further tests like an amniocentesis or fetal echocardiogram are needed, we will explain why and help you schedule them.

When Will I Get My Results?

You don't have to wait for a phone call days later. In an MFM clinic, the doctor performing the scan is the specialist making the diagnosis. You will receive your results immediately at the end of the appointment, along with a detailed report to share with your primary obstetrician.

Questions to ask your doctor

If you are less than 14 weeks pregnant, having a full bladder helps lift the uterus out of the pelvis for better images. Drink two glasses of water an hour before your appointment. After 14 weeks, a full bladder is usually not necessary.
We strongly recommend making childcare arrangements. The scan requires deep concentration from the doctor, and the room will be dark. It's also important that you can focus entirely on the medical information being discussed.
